Newkirk wrestlers show out at Conference Tournament
Press Release
CLEVELAND, Okla. — Newkirk wrestlers traveled to Cleveland this past weekend and wrestled in a tough conference tournament, which included teams outside of 3A: Grove, Bartlesville, Mannford and Cleveland.
Newkirk walked away with five placers, who all battled it out in a two-day tournament. Dawson Guidry walked away with a 5fifthplace finish at 106 pounds, beating a Barnsdall opponent by pin fall in the first period. Dayton Cary capped off a tough tournament with a second place finish, dropping his finals match 6-2 to a Cleveland grappler. Next, Ryan Locke had arguably the toughest weekend of all the Newkirk wrestlers, going 4-1 on the weekend and finishing with a third place medal, pinning his opponent from Inola in the second period. Austin Peri pulled down a weight class, competing at 182 pounds, grinding out a second place finish after dropping a very close contest in his finals match losing 6-5 to a Mannford opponent.
Lastly, Stormy Mann finished his tournament with a fourth place finish, bringing his record to 17-10.
“We wrestled hard and I thought we competed well. This tournament is really tough, but wrestling competition like this right before our regional tournament will help get us prepared to wrestle on a big stage,” Coach Bryan Dutton remarked.
The Tigers will be traveling to Geary, Okla. as they look to punch their ticket to the state tournament next weekend Feb. 21- 22
