Lady Tigers go 1-2 at Regionals
The Lady Tigers basketball squad traveled to Regionals held at Dale last week, ending with a close overtime loss that thwarted a chance to advance to Area play.
The team faced a difficult first-game draw against the No. 1 ranked Dale Pirates in Class 2A on Feb. 24.
The Tigers fell 33 to 59, sending them to the consolation bracket, where they took on the Chelsea Dragons at 1 p.m. on Friday.
The Lady Tigers took a 6-3 first quarter lead and stretched the advantage to 16-11 by half time with lock down defense. Newkirk matched its offensive output and defensive acumen in the second half and prevail 36-21.
Next up for The Lady Tigers was Crescent Tigers on Saturday, a team they had beaten in District play nine days earlier, 34-30.
A victory would mean advancing to Area play in Enid. The Lady Tigers led 18-14 at the half. The second half was a much closer contest with both teams nearly tied for much of it.
The score was knotted 31-31 with one minute left and went into overtime, where the Crescent team clamped down and managed to win 35-31 over Newkirk.
The Lady Tigers finished the season 19-8.
