Press Release

NEWKIRK—Newkirk High School is excited to recognize students that exemplify the Newkirk ideals and this month the faculty and staff have selected Maya Gentry and Chase Watson.

Maya is the daughter of Michelle Gentry Pat and Roy Gentry. She is active in STEPP-UP, National Honor Society and Student Ambassadors. Her favorite subject in school is yearbook, because she enjoys the creativity and getting to be involved with the whole student body.

Her honors include the Superintendent’s Honor Roll at Pioneer Technology Center, and she attributes her success in school to her family, teachers and friends.

She plans to attend college and earn her Associates Degree in Early Childhood and Elementary Education. Her advice to underclassmen is to learn to treat others respectfully and to create a better environment for others to be in.

Watson is the son of James and Dawn Watson. He is involved in band, Technology Student Association and Health Occupation Students of America, and he is a Student Ambassador. He is interested in all things science and geek culture – comics, games, etc. His favorite subject is biology because he is fascinated with how life exists and changes over time.

Awards and honors he has received include National Honor Society and Society of High School Scholars, and he will graduate with honors. He contributes his success in school to his friends, family, interests and his drive to better himself.

His plans after high school are to go to college, medical school and complete a residency to become a clinical geneticist. His advice to underclassmen is to remember that the best way to be good to others is to be good to yourself. Helping others and striving to be the best version of you is the best thing that you can do.
