Newkirk Main Street, city partner to clean up community

Press Release

NEWKIRK — In an effort to beautify the community, Newkirk Main Street has partnered with the city of Newkirk to sponsor this year’s annual Spring Clean Up Day.

The event, planned from 10 a.m. to noon May 15, will include a hot dog lunch for participants, and free roll-off dumpsters on city property to allow residents to dispose of large items not usually picked up during regular trash removal. T-shirts will be given on a first come, first served basis to those who volunteer to assist.

The event is held annually by Newkirk Main Street and the city of Newkirk, in conjunction with the Great American Cleanup and Keep Oklahoma Beautiful (KOB), the latter of which helped the Newkirk community obtain grant for a “Welcome to Newkirk” sign.

The city of Newkirk and Newkirk Main Street selected May 15 as the date for the event, to follow the Town-wide Garage sales, held May 1, so that roll off containers would be available for excess trash, as well as other large household or property trash removal.

The dumpsters will be located at the water department, 10thStreet and Elm.

“Additional dumpsters are brought in, and they are placed at the water department. They’ll be free for the community to use at that time,” City Manager Ryan Smykil said. “We thought it would be a good idea to have it after community-wide garage sales. If they didn’t sell it, they can bring it here.”

The community is invited to take part in the clean up, and volunteers are asked to meet at 10 a.m. at City Hall and wear clothes appropriate for work. Gloves, high-visibility safety vests and trash bags will be provided, courtesy of KOB.

In addition to individual community supporters, local organizations are also welcome to participate, and the community will be divided amongst the groups to clean up Newkirk.

“Our goal is to assign each organization an area, and they go out and they clean it up,” Newkirk Main Street Director Alyssa McCleery said. “The areas may vary, based on time constraints and volunteers.”
