NEWKIRK — Newkirk residents interested in participating in city government now have an opportunity to get involved, as the city of Newkirk is accepting letters of intent for City Commission position 1, recently vacated by former Commissioner Derek Cassady.

The position runs through January 2020, after which an election will be held to fill the position for a term of three years.

Cassady was elected April 4, 2017, and was sworn into office April 10. He resigned his position following the Oct. 14 meeting.
The city of Newkirk is now accepting letters of interest from the community to serve as commissioner. Interested individuals must be a Newkirk resident at least six months prior to appointment, at least 25 years of age and must have voter registration with the state of Oklahoma.

Those who qualify may mail or deliver a sealed letter to the city government building, 107 W. Seventh. The letters will be opened at the Nov. 4 commission meeting.

“The commission will appoint someone out of those letters,” said City Clerk Kellie Johnson.

An election for the position is planned for 2020. Those appointed to the position may apply for election, or may serve only for the duration of the interim position. For more information, call the city office, at (580) 362-2117.
