Walkable community project celebrated Friday
Join the Newkirk Chamber of Commerce, Newkirk Main Street, and the City of Newkirk at 1 p.m. Friday for a ribbon cutting of the Newkirk Pathway, which encompasses new downtown streetscapes, intersection upgrades, and over 4 miles of new sidewalk through Newkirk.
Meet at the stoplight (7th and Main) in downtown in front of the Post Office to celebrate and acknowledge the Newkirk city employees who assisted the Oklahoma Department of Transportation during the construction.
The most recent phase was completely funded by the Oklahoma Department of Transportation with no funding required by the City of Newkirk. In 2019, Hannah Cross, Jane Thomas and Jenny Creech began applying for grants to create the Newkirk Pathway, which sought to replace broken sidewalks, improve pedestrian safety, and provide ADA accessible routes.
The goal of the project was to connect the school campus, downtown and Lions Park and create a more walkable community. The pathway project represents the largest pedestrian infrastructure investment the city has seen in the last 30 years, creating a connected sidewalk network where gaps previously existed.
