Kay County 4-H teams win big at regional competition

STILLWATER, Okla. — The Kay County 4-H junior and senior livestock judging teams recently competed at the Oklahoma State University (OSU) Big Three Field Day competitions, and both teams returned home with numerous individual and team awards, including Overall Champions for both teams.

The field day was held July 16 – 18 in Stillwater, an annual event that draws nearly 2,000 students from across Oklahoma, as well as Florida, Arkansas, Kansas, Colorado, Texas and New Mexico.

The senior team received Overall Big 3 Champions and were also the winners of the Joe Hughes Memorial Traveling Trophy. The team additionally were Swine Day Champions, Cattle Day Reserve Champions and received third place for Sheep Day.

Two junior teams competed, winning Overall Big 3 Champions and fourth place. They were Champions and Reserve Champions on Cattle Day, and won fourth place and ninth place on Swine Day and sixth place and ninth place on Sheep Day.

Senior individual awards were Hattie Steichen, Ponca City, third place; Caleb Edens, Ponca City, seventh place; and Tyler Steichen, Ponca City, 12thplace.

Junior individuals awards were Tucker Jeffries, Newkirk, third place; Justin Fast, Ponca City, ninth place; Reid Buellesfeld, Blackwell, 10thplace.
