City to accept bids for garbage collection

NEWKIRK — The Newkirk city commission convened for their meeting Monday evening, Dec. 13, and voted to accept bids for garbage collection services.

The city has long had a contract with Davis Sanitation, but is now looking to offer that service to another company.

“They have been on a five-year contract, and it has been renewed for many years, so we’re going out for bids this time,” said city Commissioner Joe Anderson.

Anderson said there is no real problem with the service of Davis Sanitation, rather it is a better route to take to accept bids instead of simply renewing the contract.

“There are certain requirement on bidding out jobs in situations like this. I don’t think there is any special reason, other than it’d be better to put it out for bids,” he said. “This is probably the best way to do it.”
