Smith thanks workers who helped save her life

Ashley Smith, a survivor of a deadly accident that occurred south of Arkansas City last July, has been invited to join other trauma survivors for Wesley Health Care’s first Trauma Survivor Day on May 21 in Wichita.
Smith announced the news on her social media page last week.
“To say that I’m honored to receive this invitation is a little odd … but I am proud to have received this invite and I do plan to attend,” Smith wrote.
Last month, Smith visited personnel at the Newkirk Public Safety Center. It marked the first time since her July accident that she had met all of the crew who helped save her life on July 3 of last year. The accident killed Dawnetta Buell, 42, of Arkansas City.
The driver of the other vehicle, Robert Mahoney, was sentenced last year to 25 years in prison on a manslaughter charge.
“Trauma is real. I experienced it and I’m not the only one,” Smiths said. “I’m so glad that Wesley is going to recognize trauma victims and our healing journey. This is also a part of mental healing.”
She had five surgeries at Wesley in the period following the accident through July 15. Smith had been living in Arkansas City at the time of her accident, but now spends more time in Ponca City with family as she continues her recovery.
Smith added that she is pleased with her progress so far, she still admits she has a hard time making what may seem easy, but really is not.
“To most, I look like my normal self except with scars that are visible with shorts on,” she added.
Smith confessed that there are many things she cannot do, but she believes she will one day.
As the one-year mark approaches, Smith said she looks forward to what her level progress will be. She drove for the first time since her accident and acknowledged that she still has anxiety about being behind the wheel of a car.
