Courthouse centennial celebration
Staff Report
There will be a celebration for the centennial of the Kay County Courthouse at 11 a.m. Oct. 28. That will mark the date in 1926 when the then-new courthouse was dedicated.
There will be a parade beginning at 11 a.m. that will go through downtown Newkirk. A centennial ceremony will then be held at noon on the courthouse steps. Throughout the day, there will be food trucks and courthouse tours.
Renovation is about to begin on the courthouse fountain. Kay County Commissioners recently approved work to begin before the end of May and be completed before July. Kaleidoscope Construction was the lowest bidder with $44,395 with all commissioners approving.
At the April 20 meeting, Commissioner Jason Shanks said there would be two potential alternate costs for the project. If there were plumbing repairs to be made, Shanks said, the cost would be $3,450. If any concrete required jackhammering, the cost would be $3,642.
