City to crack down on dogs at large
News Release
Last week, the City of Newkirk issued a statement on its social media page reminding people to be responsible pet owners.
“Recently, we’ve seen an increase in dogs roaming loose around town,” the statement read. “While your pup may be the sweetest dog you’ve ever met, not everyone knows that. Even the friendliest dogs can become frightened, chase wildlife, run into traffic, or end up in situations that put them — or others — at risk.”
The city reminded people that the city ordinance requires dogs to be on a leash or otherwise properly restrained when off the owner’s property.
The city also advised that they will begin issuing fines for dogs found running at large.
The city’s statement also reminded people that one of the easiest ways to help their dog get home safely if they ever wander off is to purchase a city dog license.
They’re just $10 per dog, available at City Hall, and require proof of a current rabies vaccination. Licenses must be renewed each year, and the city tag gives Animal Control a quick way to identify the pet and reunite them with their owner.
The city also encouraged everyone to do their part to help reduce pet overpopulation by spaying and neutering their pets. Right now, the city stressed, animal rescues are full — not just locally.
