Stolen cow recovered in Wichita

An incident involving a cow on the loose in a Wichita neighborhood last Thursday evening had a surprising connection to Kay County.
According to Kay County Sheriff Steve Kelley, the cow came from a 1992 stock trailer that was stolen from 9800 W. Bender Road, west of Newkirk. The trailer and cow were recovered in Wichita, he confirmed.
The cow had briefly escaped the trailer when law enforcement first opened it up. During the cow’s brief escape, it was the talk on social media in the Wichita area as the local Wichita News Flash social media page posted a description of the police radio traffic it was hearing as the cow was being pursued.
The cow broke through the window of Jordan Chiropractic at 2604 W. Ninth St. North. Damage was estimated at $5,000.
There had been some initial fear that the cow had broken out of the nearby Old Cowtown Museum, but Old Cowtown Museum Board of Trustees member Katherine Eppich Catlin confirmed all of its cows were accounted for.
Kelley said the investigation is on-going, with several leads to follow up on.
“Arrests are to be made there in the very near future,” he said.
