Lee, Weant named NHS April Students of the Month
Press Release
NEWKIRK — Newkirk High School (NHS) is excited to recognize students that exemplify the Newkirk ideals and this month the faculty and staff have selectedSamantha Lee and Toby Weant
Lee is the daughter of Holly and Billy Lee. She is active in the National Honor Society and is a wrestling mat maid. Her favorite subject in school is science because it’s the area that she feels she belongs in and she also feels a connection to it.
Her awards include being selected as Wrestling Homecoming Queen, listed on the Superintendent’s Honor Roll, and National Honor Society. She attributes a huge part of her success in school to her mom. If it wasn’t for her always pushing her to be the best version of herself, and making the sacrifices she has made, she wouldn’t have the drive and motivation that she has to achieve her dreams.
Her plans after high school are to attend Northern Oklahoma College for two years and then transfer to the University of Oklahoma Medical where she will continue her studies to become a child and adolescent psychiatrist.
Her advice to underclassmen is to not be afraid to ask for help and don’t let anything hold you back from an opportunity you care about and feel passionate towards.
Lee chose to honor Mrs. Payne for our Super Teacher of the Month and when asked why she shared that Mrs. Payne pushes her students to be their best. She has shown her that it’s okay to step out of her comfort zone and reach for bigger opportunities. She said Mrs. Payne uses her intelligent mind to bring out her students’ potential and to show her students how to use their knowledge and skills outside of the classroom.
Weant is the son of Kelli Burke and Charlie Martin. His activities include football, basketball and track. His favorite subjects are math and English.
He has received varsity awards for both basketball and football. He attributes his success to his parents constantly staying on top of him to keep his grades up.
His plans after high school include traveling with his grandpa and becoming a pipefitter. His advice to underclassmen is to grow up and mature in regards to their relationships with those in authority over them.
Weant selected Mrs. Vaughan to be his recipient for Super Teacher for the month of April. He said Mrs. Vaughan goes above and beyond to make sure her students are doing good in not only school but in life as well.
