NEWKIRK — Many high schools have a “Freshman Orientation” program, introducing incoming students into their new facility. Newkirk High School has joined those schools, and all freshmen and their parents are being asked to attend the orientation event as part of the enrollment process.

Freshmen Orientation will take place from 10 a.m. to noon in the High School Commons Aug. 3 during regular enrollment. The program was created to aid the incoming students.

“It was our teachers’ idea to help our freshmen be more successful,” said NHS Principal Cathy Bible.

The students and their parents will have a variety of activities that day, not just meeting teachers but also learning more about NHS, including dress code, grades and even Homecoming.

“Freshman Orientation is an opportunity for our freshman students and parents to meet our freshman teachers, learn the ropes of NHS, get information about organizations that they can join and play some team-building games,” she said.

All students may enroll Aug. 3. Returning students will enroll from 8 a.m. – noon, and new students can enroll 1 – 3 p.m. New students must bring their transcript, immunization card, birth certificate and proof of residency.
