Newkirk wrestlers dominate over the weekend

OWASSO, Okla. — Last weekend, the Newkirk High School wrestling team traveled to Owasso, Okla. where they took on some of the top teams around the nation.

Newkirk wrestled Edmond Memorial, Cushing, Manhattan, Kan., Claremore, Watonga and Springdale, Ark. While at this tournament, Dawson Guidry shined, going undefeated and dominating his way to a 6-0 performance. Guidry boosted his win total to 16 total wins on the year with 10 pin falls and 30 takedowns so far on the season.

Other wrestlers that looked extraordinary are Austin Peri, Ryan Locke, Dayton Cary and Stormy Mann.

The Junior High also wrestled this past weekend at the Carmen Classic in Pawhuska, Okla. The Tigers had one wrestler, Kyson Theil who arose to the challenge and took home a gold medal by placing first in his weight division. Theil avenged a loss in his finals match beating a Blackwell opponent by pinning him in the first period.

“Theil looked aggressive the entire weekend, and he wrestled as hard as we have ever seen him wrestle. He continues to put in the work and is getting better and better every time he steps onto the mat,” Coach Woody Woodburn said.

Newkirk will take on number seven-ranked Sperry during homecoming at the Mark Branch Field House Thursday, Jan. 0,hwith action beginning at 6 p.m. Also, the wrestling program will be hosting a baked potato sale in the wrestling room beginning at 4 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 31 during basketball homecoming. Come out and get a loaded baked potato and a desert for $7 while you watch the basketball game this Friday.
