NEWKIRK, OKLAHOMA
Heading Toward the Future
Demographics - Census Data
The citizens of NEWKIRK welcome your interest in our community.
We are proud of our community and our unique heritage as the
county seat of Kay County established during the great land run
with the opening of the Cherokee Outlet on September 16, 1893.
As a small rural community, it is meeting the challenge of a
changing economic scene.
As a result of the dedication and leadership of community volunteers,
NEWKIRK was selected as one of the first three small towns in
the state to participate in the National Main Street Program,
designed to revitalize and improve business areas. Historic store
fronts have been renovated and once empty buildings are filling
with successful new businesses.
The community has invested in itself for the future. The city
has an unlimited supply of electricity, a new sewer plant, and
a recently renovated water treatment plant. With the assistance
of the the city it has refurbished the downtown area with new
sidewalks, landscaping, street lighting, a newly resurfaced Main
Street and a positive attitude about the future.
The "QUALITY 0F LIFE" segment
highlights the school system and the advanced educational opportunities
available; cultural and entertainment options; as well as community
organization, churches and health care services.
The "COMMUNITY PROFILE"
presents a short history and a brief statistical summary of our
area. Tax and housing information as well as organizations involved
in business and economic development are included.
The "BUSINESS PROFILE"
provides information on local business as well as utilities,
transportation and shipping details.
The "DEMOGRAPHICS"
section provides statistical information as compiled by the State
Department of Commerce.
Additional information is available by contacting the Newkirk
Main Street office.
