Joan Edith Horinek
Joan Edith Horinek, longtime Newkirk resident, died May 10,
2007 at her home. She was 85.
The daughter of Joe and Edith (Connelly)
Psikal, Joan was born Jan. 19, 1922 in Ponca City. She lived
with her family in the rural Ponca City area and began school
there. After her mother's death in 1932, Joan went to live in
Kildare with an uncle and aunt, Frank and Mary Gabriel, and she
finished her education at Kildare School.
On July 7, 1942, Joan and Thomas Joseph Horinek were married
in Ponca City. They established their home in Newkirk, living
in his grandparents' house. She enjoyed the job of being a homemaker
for her husband and their four children. In the 1960s, she was
employed for a time in the school cafeteria of St. Francis Catholic
School. Mr. Horinek died Nov. 19, 1977.
A member of St. Francis Catholic Church, she was also a member
of the St. Francis Altar Society. She enjoyed cooking, gardening
and fishing. She especially enjoyed her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She is survived by her children, Ken and Susan Horinek, Newkirk,
Carolyn and J.R. Kirkendall, Newkirk, Janice and Bob Morgan,
Tulsa, and daughter-in-law, Julie Horinek, Ponca City, three
sisters, Mary Cain, Denver, CO, Louise Snyder, Nicoma Park, OK,
and Dorothy Carter, Tulsa; grandchildren, Traci Kirkendall, Jay
Kirkendall, and James and Regina Kirkendall, all of Newkirk,
Kerri Kirkendall, Kelli and John Polakowski, and Lindsey Kirkendall,
all of Ponca City, Matthew and Heather Horinek, Tulsa, Dillon
Horinek, Ponca City, Brad Morgan, New York City, NY, Katie Morgan,
Charlotte, NC, Kendra and Tony Smith, Newkirk, Todd and Tonya
Horinek, Ponca City; and 12 great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband Tom, Joan was preceded in death by
a son, Larry Horinek, her parents, a brother, Raymond Psikal,
and a sister, Billie Hiller.
The Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated May 15 in St. Francis
of Assisi Catholic Church with the Rev. Joseph Vas as celebrant
and assisted by the Rev. Richard Beckman. Interment followed
in Resthaven Memorial Cemetery, Ponca City. Arrangements are
under the direction of Miller-Stahl Funeral Service.
Grandsons serving as casket bearers were Jay Kirkendall, James
Kirkendall, Matthew Horinek, Dillon Horinek, Brad Morgan and
Todd Horinek. Honorary bearers are grandsons-in-law, Tony Smith
and John Polakowski.
The family requests that memorial contributions be made to either
St. Francis Catholic Church or Hospice of North Central Oklahoma
through Eastman National Bank, Box 468, Newkirk 74647-0468.
Lena Pearl Mitchell
Lena Pearl Mitchell, Fayetteville, AR, died May 10, 2007 at
Washington Regional Medical Center, Fayettville. She was 92.
Lena was born July 3, 1915 at Cedar Vale, KS, the daughter of
Oscar William and Ida Leapley Olson. She was preceded in death
by her husband, Leonard Pete Mitchell, who died Nov. 7, 1995.
Lena was a homemaker. She was a member of the Presbyterian Church,
and the Order of the Eastern Star, University Chapter 495. She
was also a member of the Daughters of the Nile and was a Paul
Harris Fellow of the Rotary Club.
She is survived by a son and daugher-in-law, Gary and Jacqueline
Mitchell, of Fayetteville; three grandchildren, Christine Mitchell,
Phoenix, AZ, William Mitchell and his wife, Cheri, Garden Grove,
CA, Michael Mitchell and his wife, Laura, Mesa, AZ, and two great-grandsons.
Services were held May 14 at Moores' Chapel, Fayetteville, with
Dr. Jere D. Mitchell officiating. Burial followed in the Newkirk
Cemetery at Newkirk, OK.
Denise LaRae Michael
Denise LaRae Michael, resident of Helena, AL, died May 12,
2007 at her home. She was 53.
The daughter of John Ramsey, Jr. and Colleen (Penisten) Ramsey,
Denise was born Jan. 10, 1954, in Laurel, MT. She received her
education in Laurel and graduated from Laurel Senior High School.
On June 24, 1972, she married Gary Lynn Michael, Sr. of Park
City, MT.
Denise was an expert salesperson and after gaining experience
in this field with several companies, she owned and operated
Tailored for Success in Birmingham, AL.
A member of Hunter Street Baptist Church, she influenced many
lives by her Christian example, love of people, generous spirit
and work for those less fortunate than she. She volunteered at
Children's Hospital, delivered Meals on Wheels, was a member
of the board for Dress for Success, was a Christian mentor for
women with The Foundry and traveled with several mission teams.
She also worked with her husband in the Hunter Street Baptist
Marriage Preparation Classes.
She is survived by her husband, Gary Lynn Michael, Sr., two daughters,
Danielle Hines of Helena, AL; Darby McDuff of Pelham, AL; a son,
Gary Lynn Michael, Jr., Helena; her mother, Colleen Ramsey, a
sister, Cherie Sigrist; a brother, Colen Ramsey; and four grandchildren,
Claudia and Parker McDuff and Seaburn and Addison Hines. Her
father, John A. Ramsey, preceded her in death.
A memorial service was held at the Hunter Street Baptist Church
in Hoover, AL. Graveside services and interment were held May
16 in the Newkirk Cemetery with the Rev. Dr. J. D. Ward officiating.
The family were to be at the home of Bob and Kay Whitlock, 2619
Mockingbird Drive, Ponca City, on May 16.
