Superintendent Brady Barnes reported the findings of a Newkirk Bond Election Committee Monday night that is recommending three bond issue questions for Newkirk school patrons to decide, possibly as early as February.

The three questions in Phase 1, if approved by voters, would be a total of $8.2 million.

The following is a list of the ideas suggested by the committee.

Question 1 -  Route Buses $550,000

Question 2 -  Elementary Remodel, $250,000; Early Childhood Center with Safe Room, $2.5 million; Gymnasium with Safe Room, $3.69 million; New Middle School Roof, $750,000; LED Lighting for District, $160,000; and Technology, $100,000.

Question 3 - Activity Bus, $200,000.

“I appreciate the work of the committee so much,” Barnes said.  “They have met a number of times, met with the architect, talked to people in the community.  They have put a lot of work into these recommendations.”

Barnes said the key is that with this plan, each facility would have a safe room within easy access.

“An Early Childhood Center would have a safe room and a new gym would have one as well,” he said.  “That is very important in anything we construct going forward.”

He added the community would have access to the safe room.

Barnes added he wants input from the community, they can visit with a board member or school official at any time, they can also take an online survey.

The survey can be found at https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/G5P27NX
There are 20 questions on the survey, the community can provide input as the plan moves forward.

Barnes said the plan to call an election must be approved at the December 12th meeting in order to be placed on a February 14th ballot.  Voters will also vote on a board of education member on the February 14th ballot.

Board president Russell Cobb added, “The committee has talked to people in the community and they have used that input in putting the plan together.  I believe we need to support this committee going forward.  They have worked hard to get input of the entire school district.”

The 10 member bond election committee is made up of local school patrons in Newkirk and Braman, each board member provided two names for the committee.

The committee met with Barnes and developed a tentative proposal for the future bond issue.

A Phase 2 plan could be voted on in 2023.  That phase would include a New Fieldhouse, $2 million; new Agriculture/FACS Classroom, $1 million; Repair and Resurface Track, $500,000; Performing Art Center with Auditorium, $3 million; Baseball and Softball Lights, $300,000; Band Instruments, $50,000; Technology, $100,000; and Repair Roof at Mark Branch Fieldhouse, $150,000.  The total for Phase 2 Improvements would be $7.2 million.

According to school officials, the property tax millages, currently at 29.47 mills, would not increase to as high as 30 mils over the course of either project phase.
